1. You're running two companies and traveling regularly — how do you stay grounded as a dad while managing such a demanding professional schedule?
Being super organised on both the business front and family side is key. Setting time aside for family is really important to me, even just for the simple things like eating meals together each day (in between calls for me). I try to set an example to the kids and not reply to non urgent messages when i'm at the dinner table!
2. Your kids are active in competitive sports, which comes with its own intense calendar. What does a typical week look like balancing boardrooms and bleachers?
A couple of mornings there's 5am starts at the swimming pool for the kids, so I bring the laptop and sit in the stands starting the work day. It's a great time to be heads down and focus, at that time of day the Clicks Slack groups and email is pretty quiet.
3. What's your favorite part of being a dad right now?
Watching the growth and progress of your kids, the change happens so fast! I also love that they're now old enough to get a better understanding what I do for business,
4. You've said before that parenting makes you a better leader. How has being a father shaped how you lead at Clicks?
The responsibility of being a father is a life long task that never stops right. When I now see some of the younger staff I see us being responsible for the well being and development so they can flourish and be the best of what they can be.
5. What's one non-negotiable you try to protect every week, no matter how busy things get — whether it's with your kids or for yourself?
Not necessarily each week, but I will make sure I'm there for the big events like the sports event or plays, as that's what matters for them the most. On a personal front, I'm pretty religious about my weekly football game, for that 60 minutes I get to totally switch off and enjoy having a good game with my buddies.
6. Do your kids think what you do is cool? Or are you just "Dad with the weird phone case"?
Ha great question, there's definitely an element of dad doing some cool stuff, let's hope it lasts for as long as possible!
7. Last one — any advice for fellow working dads trying to do it all?
Wake up early a few days a week! Time is your most precious resource each week.
